What would you pay to own the very first RC10 Graphite to come off the assembly line?

Mint in shrink wrapped box.
With "#1 19 June 1989" written under the shrink wrap.

Tell me what you would pay...

Yeowie! Hard to put a price on that bad boy. AE would probably be the buyer given a bidding war, given it's a pretty major piece of their history. Do you have #1 Jeep, or is this a hypothetical question?

I find it somewhat hard to believe the first kit off the assembly line never got built, but then again, stranger things have happened.

BTW I'll give ya $25.

$0.50

Speaking of which... I totally forgot that I have an Origonal RS4 (with the gearbox and single belt) still in factory wrap... LOL. Why? I dunno.

RC10 Graphite? Not interested, I'd be much more interested in the original RC10 with the gold tub chassis.

I thought someone would ask that. To be honest, I have no clue. I will probably never be able to acquire proof.
Regardless, I did not pay much of a premium for it's claimed uniqueness. Even with out the #1 thing, it could be argued to be worth what I payed for it.
I have asked the seller, via email, to write up a short blurb on the history of the kit (at least what he knew, like where he got it from, etc). I want to put the story on my website, along with some pictures. He has agreed to do this. It seems pretty legit. Besides, if I really believe that it is, isn't that good enough

was`nt that a limited production car produced by Team A because people wanted a graphite chassy. Its was pressed and formed into a chassy shape right?

Not the $450.00 you paid. It would be nice to have an older RC10 in mint condition, but $450.00 I would buy a couple of new ones. I remember buying the graphite kit new in 90 or 91? I think I paid around $150.00? Don't know what happen to that car?

Hey Jeep,
an easy way to look into it would be to give AE a call. I am sure they would be able to give you some insight into it. Like for instance, "yeah, we would/did hand write the kit number and date on those early kits," or something to that extent. Of course you also risk a needle to the bubble, but it would be well worth it if they were able to confirm in some way that it is in fact what it appears to be.

BTW, that is ssuuhhwwweeeeeeeett!!!

Ya, I lost a MIB (but slightly crushed box) RC10 Graphite a few days ago to this "typischdesign" character. And I bid like $405 on that! It would be like the 3rd time I was outbid by this clown on something over the last 2 years or so.
Anyway, the seller emailed me his auction right after he posted it.
It was up for all of 12 minutes

The decision was a pretty easy one. I do indeed like the "buy it now" feature.

EDIT: The people who suggested to email AE have a great idea. The only problem is that I have emailed them three times in the past regarding various things. I have yet to receive anything back from them
Anyone have any direct email addreses for those people? Like Gene's ?

Excellent idea!
The simplest things usually elude me

Thanks for the number. I'll call tomorow and report back to the thread. Hey, this could be kind of exciting.

Headline:
- Jeep's RC10 Graphite is REAL. Gene was reported to have said, "My wife sold that years ago, thinking it was a normal kit. And now that it has turned up I am utterly delighted". It appears Gene is flying Jeep down to Santawhatever to attend a celebration. Jeep has reportedly sold the kit back to Gene for $35,000. The other part of the arrangement was for immediate production of the RC10 JE (Jeep Edition). Sources say that the kit may be beer powered.

Hey Jeep, this "typischdesign" dude supposedly has or is going to make some sort of r/c museum. If you get into a bidding war with him, you're screwed. He seems to have unlimited funds. The bastard seems to buy everything I like too.

It's real....

Well, here's the real story....
I think it was a couple of years ago, we were cleaning out the warehouse, and the shipping manager, Wayne Campbell, came across this kit. It was not unusual for Associated to keep the first kits, numbered like that from the initial production runs. He just walked in the front office with it and asked if anybody wanted it, and Pete Cooney, Purchasing and production manager, said "Sure, I'll take it."
About this same time, I was just getting into EBAY, and was selling a guitar for our Sales guy, Garry Owen on EBAY. I got a good amount of money for it... a surprising amount, in fact. Pete noted this and asked if I'd post this kit for him, with the reserve set at the list price (on the box). I did it, got ONE GUY who bid on it.... right at the reserve, and we shipped it to him the next day. However, you're right... it's the original "Golden Bathtub" kits that are really bringing the collectors out, as well as ANY original white parts.
By the way, I have spotted an old #6010 or 6020 box, shrinkwrapped back in shipping, But I think Wayne is FULLY aware of it's worth!!!

Hey Mike, thanks for the info!
I called the AE office today and spoke with Julie Husting. She said it was very unlikely that it was the number one kit, so it is good to hear otherwise.
She asked me for a pic of the writing on the box. I took a pic and emailed her the link to it.
Here is that pic (I received it in the mail today!):

Who actually wrote that on the box?

Mike,

What ever happen with idea of bringing back the old gold tub kit? I remember hearing a year or so ago Associated was pondering re-releasing that kit. If not, how much do you/they want for that sealed 6010/6020 kit? Seriously.

Thanks,
Chad

Re-issue Original RC10?

Chad... The idea got shelved when it was discovered that some of the original tooling either broke, or got modified to make the molded parts. So, it would probably be ridiculously expensive to re-create the molds to do a limited edition kit.
I don't think those sealed original kits are going to be for sale. We know better now!!

By the way, the handwriting is from Shipping Manager Wayne Campbell, a long-time Associated employee. He remembers doing this right as the first kit rolled into the shrink-wrap machine.

Ok I am willing to bet the girl you talked to hasn't been there for 10 years so she wouldn't know off the top of her head. Well it is unlikely to jsut get the first kit, but someone has to have it. Why else would someone keep a kit new in the package? Thats like someone taking a t3 now and saving it for 10 years for no reason. They didn't know in 1989 their car would be one, if not the, biggest r/c company. To be honest I think its legit. Theres alot of work involved in re-wrapping it and all. I would ask for like the highest person you can speak to thats been their for ages and speek with them. You might have the millon dollar kit in your hands jeep. (don't know actual value jsut saying million to say a value) i would do alot of research you might get really lucky

Jeep, personally, I would be 100 % certain after I called AE and spoke to Mike Ogle and thanked him for verifying the authenticity of the kit. That would accomplish a couple of things: Mike would receive an appreciated TY; you would know, w/o a doubt, that it was Mike Ogle that posted the verification. I hate to be untrusting, but it is so easy to fabricate such a response over a BB. Hey, why leave any room for doubt?

take care,
serv

There is an equally complex authentication issue by calling as well. Anyone could say they were him
Besides, I have been communicating via email. I feel pretty confident at this point..
The thanking him part is a great idea though!

Why not ask Mike or Wayne to print up a Certificate of Authenticity. Heck, it isn't hard and could drum up a lot of free publicity for them. Afterall, who would know more than the guy who actually wrote the date on the back?

The box is filled with old broken Tamiya parts. Mostly Fox and The Frog parts. Associated used these in the late 80's for testing. The wherehouse guy built the #1 graphite kit then filled the box with broken parts and reshrink wrapped it. The funny thing is know one will ever know because know one will ever open the package! This is why he did it.

Oh,, So how much is it worth. Nothing without the right parts!

Jeep, open the damm box already!
